Olson and Tyler, who sued the state of California for the right to marry, were the first same-sex couple in the state to marry when it became legal in 2008 (although same-sex marriage was banned by voters later that year). Their wedding attracted a great deal of media attention.

Beijing, China

A news report last month stated that an anonymous male couple was the first same-sex couple every to have a wedding in Beijing. However, I have also discovered reports of the couple in this picture marrying on Valentine’s Day in 2009. So it’s a little confusing.

San Rafael, California

The officiant, Rev. Jane Adams Spahr, was found guilty last year of violating the Presbyterian Church policy against marrying same-sex couples. She said she does not plan to leave the church. Read more here. Curiously, this month Presbyterian minister Jean K. Southard, who has also performed a same-sex wedding, was found not guilty on the same charge.

Washington, D.C.

They were among the first same-sex couples legally married in Washington, D.C. Both Garner and Holmes are ministers of the Metropolitan Community Churches. Also in the picture is officiant, Rev. Dwayne Johnson. The wedding took place at the national offices of the Human Rights Campaign.

Iowa

Zach Wahls, 19, the son of Jackie and Terry, recently made a viral video splash with his eloquent testimony before the Iowa House of Representatives in defense of marriage equality. He later appeared on television together with his mothers and his sister. This picture features him at his mothers’ commitment ceremony in 1996. They later legally married in 2009 when Iowa extended the freedom to marry. At their second ceremony, Zach served as his moms’ best man.
