Stephan Hengst and Patrick Decker, August 1, 2009
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Caption from Reuters: “Dutch born Stephan Hengst (R) kisses his husband Patrick Decker who was born in U.S. after being married by Amsterdam’s Mayor Job Cohen on an official wedding boat during the Gay Pride Canal Parade in Amsterdam August 1, 2009. Cohen married five American-Dutch gay couples on Saturday in an implicit criticism of the lack of same-sex marriage in many U.S. states. All five couples had at least one partner from New York, where a battle over the legalisation of gay marriage rages on.”

Sean Fritz and Timothy McQuillan, August 31, 2007
Des Moines, Iowa
They were the first same-sex couple to marry in the state during a brief window when it was legal for just a few hours. The district court judge who had ruled in favor of marriage equality issued a stay the next day, preventing any other same-sex couples from obtaining a wedding license until the state’s Supreme Court ruled in 2009. Also featured in the picture is the couple’s officiant, Rev. Mark Stringer, minister of the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines. The wedding took place on Stringer’s front lawn.
Alberto Sánchez Fernández and Alberto Linero Marchena, Sept. 2006
Seville, Spain
Both are Spanish soldiers. Although marriage is legal for same-sex couples in Spain, Linero claims that he was discharged from the Spanish Air Force as a result of the wedding.
Greg Gould and Aurelio Tiné, October 23, 2010
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
The couple has faced two forms of discrimination. First, although marriage for same-sex couples is legal in New Hampshire, their local newspaper, the Manchester Union-Leader, refused to run their wedding announcement. In addition, Tiné, who is from Venezuela, is facing possible deportation because bi-national same-sex couples in the United States are denied immigration rights.
Scott Gould and Paul Langsholt, Feb. 14, 2004
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Gould and Langsholt traveled to Canada from their home in Rockford, Illinois to be legally married on Valentine’s Day. This was before marriage rights had been extended to same-sex couples anywhere in the United States. They were one of seven U.S. couples who made the trip together. Also in the picture is Justice Harvey Brownstone completing their marriage paper work.

Jeremy and Andrew were the first same-sex couple ever featured in Martha Stewart Weddings magazine. They were in the Winter 2010 issue.
Phillip DeBlieck and Rev. Troy Perry, July 16, 2003
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Perry founded Metropolitan Community Churches, a Christian denomination with special outreach to LGBT people, in 1968. The pair married at the Metropolitan Church of Toronto. At the time of their marriage, the Los Angeles couple had already been together for 18 years. After marrying legally in Canada, the couple sued the state of California to have their marriage recognized. The matter of same-sex marriage in California is still not resolved. In the picture, they are holding their marriage license. Perry was quoted as saying, “Thank God for Canada.” Check out Perry’s web site.
