Netherlands was the first country in the world to extend marriage equality to all of its citizens. On the first day that the law went into effect, these four couples married in a joint ceremony. These were among the first same-sex couples ever legally married in the world.
Ross Zachs and Michael Miller, November 12, 2008
West Hartford, Connecticut
This couple married on the steps of the town hall before a crowd of supporters. They were one of the first couples to be legally married in Connecticut.
Michel Girouard and Rejean Tremblay, March 17, 1972
Los Angeles, California
Because no church in their own city would bless their relationship, this Montreal couple traveled to Los Angeles to recite their vows with Rev. Troy Perry, founder of the MCC denomination. The photo is a reminder that the need for same-sex marriage rights and rites is not new. (Perry’s own wedding was featured in the previous post. Ironically, Perry and his husband traveled to Canada to get married.)
