The couple sued the Province of Quebec for the right to marry in 2001. Their lawsuit helped pave the way to marriage equality in Canada. They married as soon as it became legal in Quebec.

Iowa City, Iowa
The Missouri couple has organized a series of “Marriage Equality Bus” trips from St. Louis to Iowa, enabling about 100 same-sex couples, including themselves, to legally marry. They plan to continue organizing the trips. Their efforts are featured in a documentary film called “Heartland Transport.” Read more here and follow their blog here.

Sadly, although they had been a couple for six years prior to the wedding, they were pressured by family to break up the day after the ceremony, according to press reports. Sharma wore a gown, but is not said to identify as transgender. All press reports describe them as a same-sex couple.

The couple was among the first same-sex couples to marry after Sweden legalized marriage equality.
In 2002, Daniel Gross and Stephen Goldstein became the first same-sex couple to ever have their wedding announced in the New York Times.
They had a religious ceremony in Montreal on Aug. 31 and a civil union ceremony at Hero Island, Vermont on Sept. 1. In this video, shot earlier this year, they reflect back on their wedding.
